Viticulture
The timing of budburst was similar to previous years. The early part of the season was notable for lower sunshine hours, especially in November. While January and February were very hot and dry, withering the surrounding hills and putting pressure on irrigation systems. This also brought forward the harvest by 10-14 days. Warm, dry conditions over harvest meant the grapes could be picked with optimum flavour and without pressure from disease or rain. -
Winemaking
The fruit for this wine was handpicked from the 8 rows of Riesling on Bladen's eastern block. It was whole-cluster-pressed very softly. After 12 hours of settling, the juice was racked and warmed. Two yeast strains were introduced to start fermentation. It fermented at a cool temperature over a number of weeks. The wine then aged on lees for 2-3 months to build texture and complexity. -
Tasting
Colour: light-straw with a green hue and a bright clarity. Nose: delicate lime and floral notes, with a suggestion of tea leaf and wet rock. Palate: citrus and green apple flavours with hints of lemongrass. This wine has a seamless, well balanced lengthy palate full of energy. Cellaring: drink now or cellar for 7 years or more. -
